Description
This is a rare 500 Lire coin from Italy, officially known as “500 Lire Bimetallic Lira Coin”, issued by the Republic of Italy (Repubblica Italiana).
It was first introduced in 1982 and became one of the world’s first bimetallic coins, made of bronze center and stainless steel ring.
The obverse features the head of a woman representing Italy, surrounded by the words “Repubblica Italiana”, while the reverse displays Christopher Columbus’ ships (the Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria) — symbolizing Italy’s maritime history and spirit of exploration.
Although Italy switched to the Euro (€) in 2002, the 500 Lire coin remains a beloved and valuable collectible for its beauty, historical importance, and innovative design.
