Description
The Rs 2 Louis Braille 1809–2009 commemorative coin was issued by the Government of India to celebrate the 200th birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille system of reading and writing for the visually impaired. This coin honors Braille’s revolutionary contribution that empowered millions across the world through literacy and inclusion.
On the obverse, the coin features the Lion Capital of Ashoka, India’s national emblem, with the inscriptions “भारत / INDIA” and the denomination value “₹2.” The reverse showcases a portrait of Louis Braille, along with the inscriptions “LOUIS BRAILLE BIRTH BICENTENARY 1809–2009” in both English and Hindi. Below the portrait, the word “Louis Braille” is embossed in Braille script, making this coin one of the few in India to feature tactile elements for the visually impaired.
Struck in stainless steel, the coin was released by the Ministry of Finance and India Government Mint to raise awareness about accessibility, education, and equal opportunities. It stands as a symbol of human achievement, compassion, and social reform.
Highly collectible for its unique design, humanitarian theme, and tactile Braille inscription, this coin is a must-have for numismatists and social history collectors.
